The Jamuna Bridge
The Jamuna Bridge is a major bridge of Bangladesh. The construction of Jamuna Bridge is an epoch-making task in Bangladesh. It is the longest in South-Asia and world’s eleventh largest bridge. This was primarily named The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge which is afterwards termed as the Bangabandhu shetu. It is 4.8 kilometers long and 18.5 meters wide. The construction of this bridge was started on the 16th October in 1991 and finally this bridge was opened to traffic on the 23rd June of 1998. 35 billion US dollars was spent to construct this bridge. It has connected sixteen districts of north and northwestern part of Bangladesh with Dhaka, the capital city. Our motherland Bangladesh, earlier divided by the Jamuna into two parts, has been united by the bridge in the real sense of the term. This bridge will, in fact, act as a catalyst to the betterment of the deprived people of north Bengal. World Bank and Japan, the co-financiers of the construction of this bridge, express their hope and optimism that the distribution of electricity, T&T and gas through the bridge, connecting roads and railway will be the key matter to overcome country’s economic crisis to a major extent. However, it is our sacred responsibility to protect this bridge from any possible damage because The Jamuna Bridge is not only proud of Bangladesh but also the hole South-Asia.
